The wreck of a British submarine that sank off the coast of Malta 70 years ago has been discovered by explorers.

HMS Olympus went down in one of the worst maritime disasters of the Second World War with the loss of all 90 men on board.

It struck a mine trying to avoid German and Italian warships blockading Grand Harbour in the early hours of May 8th 1942.

The British Government and the Royal Navy have only just been informed about the wreck’s discovery, which was made during a survey of the ocean floor last year.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission will now need to formally designate the site, which was located by the Aurora Trust - a foundation that promotes maritime cultural history.
