The Inspire 22 on their journey to the South Pole.

Antarctica's largest medical expedition

The Inspire 22 Antarctic expedition, which is made up of tri-service personnel and civilians, has completed their 900km journey to the South Pole. Not only that, but they managed it in only 47 days!

The team which is sponsored, in part, by BFBS, finished their journey on the 9th of January. It was anticipated that it would take 55-days, however the team have finished 8 days sooner - amazing work!

They began their expedition on the 25th of November with the aim of gathering important data on how the human body responded to the extreme conditions in the Antarctic.

Your questions, answered!

Amy Casey from the Big Show on BFBS Radio spoke to the team, asking some of the questions that you submitted... here are the team's responses...

Q: Overall, to date, have you found the expedition a greater challenge than expected or is it as planned?
A: From Pat, I think we always knew it was going to be difficult. So good prior planning and preparation has seen us through thus far.

Q: What is the one thing you are looking forward to or hoping for when you reach the South Pole?
A: From Mike as he sits in his sleeping bag- probably a fresh hot meal and a drink, a fresh brewed coffee.

Q: How do you weigh yourselves? Do you take scales?
A: From Nat - we’ve a pair of bathroom scales from Argos . They were the lightest we could find in the weeks before we left Uk. Stefano digs a deep hole in his tent porch the night before we weigh ourselves (every 5 days) so the ground can freeze and be stable before we do our weigh in the morning.

Q: Are they missing fish and chips?
A: Yes

Q: What they focus on or think about whilst skiing?
A: Pat normally zones out listening to music or audio books. But often thinks about face mask adjustment due to cold and wind etc. Mike says he thinks about his anaesthetic interviews and how he will answers the questions. He often daydreams about what he’s gonna do when he gets home, such as seeing friends
